"Being good in business is the best kind of art." -Andy Warhol
Overview
Arguably the most famous and influential American artist of the 20th Century, Andy Warhol created an overwhelming variety of art ranging from pretty and charming to provocative and disturbing. In the late 90's Warhol merchandise consisted of a group of products using only the most obvious iconic "Pop" pieces. The Warhol Foundation contacted KICK to create tools to guide their partners in creating products that would convey the true and prolific genius of Warhol - the man and the artist.
Challenge
To channel the spirit of Andy WarholÉhow to translate the work and attitude of a man who said, "If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There's nothing behind it." The goal was to inspire Warhol partners to harness his energy and attitude in their products and take advantage of the prolific body of work available to them.
Solution
We extracted the essence of Warhol and developed a bold and distinctive identity program that celebrates his creative genius.
We defied convention by developing a groundbreaking "Inspiration" guide that conveys the vision to the highest level of designers without stifling creativity. It gives designers direction and a context to design into - encouraging and enabling them to do their best. Our work has inspired a new and international group of upscale and designer licensees to create product that extends the Warhol legacy - and the licensing program earnings have doubled.
Warhol won the Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association's "Best Art Brand License of the Year 2005 & 2006"
